COURSE INNOVATION IN UNIVERSITIES AND EMPLOYMENT GENERATION:
Southern states in India are experiencing a boom in new colleges and universities but, facing a challenge of poor student enrollment, decline in employability among graduates/post graduates produced due to a situation of lack of relevance in course of study to societal needs at the global level.
Teaching ,support staff lacks a sharpness in latest domain knowledge to cater the specific needs which are ever changing due to knowledge explosion and, are unable to cope with the competition in the global front.
Please see this situation critically, at present there is a glut in Electronics and Communication graduates,and many are jobless,struggling to get employment,or underpaid. But their sub domain ''Digital image processing'' is a subject very much in demand in medical imaging,''X'' rays,CAT scan, and digital interpretations.All that is required is an INNOVATION of linking the relevant process, and sub domains and offer it as a course of study .Students may take it as a certificate /diploma and consequently elevate their employability.
Universities can generate funds by offering it through distance/online modes also.This approach needs some creative and selfless approach to overcome the ''INITIAL RESISTANCE'' from the respective domain of knowledge/technology experts. But such ''MATING'' of several sub-domains in Agriculture,Medicine,Arts and Science,Sports, may generate huge potential in the employment front.Prince. YES: Situation -1.Institutions with good infra-structure[
buildings/ linking roads, far away from people concentration]but teaching and
support staff lacks required skills.
Situation-2.Too many colleges in a particular
district/location and too many qualified staff but demand supply of students
not adequate.
How to fix this situation: Situation one and two are
complimenting each other by careful manipulation this can be settled well.
Situation-3. Reputed age old institutions, glut in teaching
and support staff, qualified but not having
all the enough skills to deal the
situation, poor HR management, out dated rules/regulations, native bias,
communal/regional prejudice, proliferation of malpractices-subjective
situations leading to employee over crowding, anxieties, affiliations,
agitations, lock outs ,crimes etc.
How to fix it: Adequate employee well fare measures , need
based identification of job diversification, and specific skill based in
service training, re- designation/ appropriate service rules-and gradually
situation will get stabilized after a considerable period of time. But a very
creative/ innovative, persuasive, unbiased leadership, with an expertise in
human psycho-dynamics is required to handle the situation.
Situation-4.Specific to a particular district in Tamil Nadu.
Kanya Kumari district in Tamil Nadu,southern most tip of India is with a total
area of less than 650 sq.miles and a total population of less than 19 lakhs ,with
highest literacy and population density .There are more than 30 engineering colleges
,one tech..University facing acute shortage in student enrollment. Students
prefer to join in far away institutions/universities despite the availability
of institutions at the doorstep.
How to fix it:-1. Colleges may have to provide whole some
facilities for all round development, student mix-up facilities at intra - inter-institutional
level, A well developed infrastructure for extra-curricular activities with
good hostel facilities. Scholarships for meritorious students, besides academic,
fine arts, sports and other talents also to be provided. Students from
northern, north-western/eastern, educationally backward states should be
reached, and may be provided with concessions, privileges in treatment.
2- In Malaysia, native Tamils and Chinese finds it very
difficult to get admissions for higher studies due to their reservation
policies. Our institutions can provide quality programs at an affordable cost
to their currency exchange value to Indian rupees. As well as students from
most of the African countries, may find India a suitable destination in the aspect
of affordability/safety/education quality etc.
3-Collaboration with job providers: Tie ups,with potential
job generators/ providers, appropriate training in required skills ‘’soft
skills’’and such training. Bring,appoint faculty with International
education/exposure/tie ups with higher ranked Universities may improve the
situation. Let us wish and hope Engineering colleges at Kanyakumari district

1, Modify the research program regulation format, with more emphasis on course work with more focus on acquiring in depth ''DOMAIN KNOWLEDGE'' related to the topic.
2,Adequate research directives and adviser rating,merited upon innovation,development and creation of patents towards the solution of imminent problems of the surrounding community.
3,A triangular arrangement involving the government,industry,and universities in topic selection,funding,supervision,and evaluation to provide solutions to the problems at hand may improve the situation.
4,Research auditing should be a part of routine''ACADEMIC AUDITING'' in the universities, and may employ the technique of ''CORRELATION ANALYSIS,META ANALYSIS'' of the results will help to maintain quality and originality in research.
